Growth Mindset: Teacher. Student. Graduate. Mom. Daughter. Friend.

Labels are tricky. When used correctly, they can be invaluable. But, that only works when we look at people as whole, complicated beings. When we decide to look at a label as a deficit, it becomes limiting and demeaning.

For me, ADHD has been a helpful label. There was a time when feeling overwhelmed easily made me feel less productive and, therefore, less valuable. I looked at myself as limited. I have learned, in the past few years, that there is a very good reason I get overwhelmed. It turns out, it is not a weakness but the side effect of my superpower. It is how my nervous system stays regulated while showing up for others, listening deeply, and holding space. I am, of course, more than a label. I am simply saying that labels, when used with an open mind, help me understand the dynamics of a situation and determine a better solution.

One of the things I have been attempting to label is how I want to show up in the world. How do I use a label to help communicate what I am about and what Supportive Stephanie does. In the last few weeks, I have added some labels to myself and to Supportive Stephanie. The latest labels I have adopted are graduate and life coach. There is little I love more than a meaningful conversation and seeing people thrive. With this new label, I get to offer support to kids and families who are looking for more thriving and less conflict. And, I get to help teachers thrive and prevent burnout.
